Qualification – Graduation in BE (Mechanical) Engineering / Naval Arch. with minimum of 50% marks in final year and with 50% minimum marks in English language at 10th or 12th or in Degree Exam.
Eligibility Criteria
- The eligibility for joining merchant navy is finishing class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
- Candidates have to be unmarried Indian citizens (male or female).
- Normal vision is required but glasses up to plus or minus 2.5 may be allowed.
- Admission is through an entrance followed by a screening test and a main written examination.
- After clearing the test, there is an interview and a medical test.
- You also need to complete a ship-training course prior to the employment. The course is generally short-term where the candidates are taught basic security concerns of voyaging.
There are some private institutes, which offer training for merchant navy as well. These institutes prepare students for jobs such as deck cadets and marine engineering jobs.

Merchant Navy entrance exam:
All India Merchant Navy Entrance Test (IMU-CET Online Test is conducted twice a year i.e NOVEMBER/DECEMBER & JUNE/JULY All over India.) This all India entrance is conducted for joining Merchant Navy Course in DG SHIPPING (GOVT. OF INDIA) Approved Colleges.
B.Tech NAVAL ARCHITECURE & SHIP BUILDING (4 years)
Qualification -Pass HSC OR 10+2 from a recognised board with 50% average in PCM (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics) Maximum age-25 years.
B.Tech – MARINE ENGINEERING
Qualification -Pass HSC OR 10+2 from a recognised with 60% average in PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) Maximum age-25 years
B.Sc NAUTICAL SCIENCE
Qualification -Pass HSC OR 10+2 from a recognised with 60% average in PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) Maximum age-25 years
PRE-SEA TRAINING G.P. RATINGS
Qualification – 10th pass with total average of 40% marks (with Mathematics & Science) OR Has Passed in Govt. approved 2 years ITI course from recoganised institute with 50% minimum aggregate marks. 40% marks in English subject shall required in 10th or 12th OR any Degree OR Diploma course approved by AICTE. Maximum age- 25 years
M.B.A. SHIPPING & LOGISTICS
Any degree from a GOVT recognized University OR Mariners holding following professional qualification obtained after study-cum training of 6 years after 10+2 OR Diploma from a recognised Institution leading to:
(a) Master Foreign Going Certificate of Competency.
OR
(b) First Class Motor or Combined (Chief Engineer) Certificate of Competency issued by the DG Shipping (Directorate General of Shipping), MOS (Ministry of Shipping), Govt of India or its counterparts in other countries.

Career in Merchant Navy can be pursued either as an officer or a rating in mainly two specialized fields, i.e. Marine Engineering (Engine side) and Nautical (Deck side). To become a seafarer, following streams of entries (Pre-Sea courses) are available to Indian citizens in the Government as well as in private training institutions (recognized and approved by Director General of Shipping, Ministry of Shipping).
