1 year course consists of 2 semesters and exams are conducted by Indian Maritime University. After passing out the exams conducted by the University, the cadets will be awarded DIPLOMA NAUTICAL SCIENCE by the University, The cadets will be joining on board vessel as a Trainee cadet. They has to obtain 18 months sea service (Two year’s time will be taken to complete the 18 months sea experience). With this 18 months of sea experience, they has to undergo 4 months Second mate’s foundation course & Other courses like MFA , AFF, PSCRB, ECDIS, ARPA, ROC, etc. Then they are eligible to appear for 2nd mate exams. After passing second mate exams, they will be promoted as Second officer. This Diploma Nautical Science course also leads to get B.Sc degree in Nautical Science by Indian Maritime University. During the first 18 months of sea service, University conducts the Distance learning Programme (DLP) by giving the necessary study material. With further sea service & exams they will be promoted to Chief Officer and then becoming Captain of the ship. The academy assists necessary guidance for placement for successful meritorious students.
Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS)
The one Year DNS Course is a course leading to B.Sc.(Applied Nautical Science) after 18 months of sea service and also leading to 2nd Mate Foreign going Certificate of competency awarded by the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, enabling the cadets to become Navigating officers on board Merchant Navy Ships anywhere in the world. The one year Diploma in Nautical Science Course is strictly residential.

Educational Qualifications:
Candidate should have passed in HSC (10+2) or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English as separate subjects with a PCM average of not less than 60%.
Or
Candidate possessing B.Sc. Degree in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry or Electronics with Physics as individual subject in one of the year, with an average of not less than 60% of marks in the final year.
Or
Candidate possessing B.E./B. Tech. Degree from I.I.T or from a college recognized by AICTE
The candidate has to appear and qualify in the Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted by Indian Maritime University (IMU). For further details on CET and IMU, visit http://www.imu.edu.in/.
Age Limit - Maximum 25 years of age as on 1st of January or 1st of August.
Physical Standards - Medically fit as per the standards set by M. S. Medical Examination Rules, 2000.
Eyesight - Candidates have to Qualify a full eyesight test conducted by the Mercantile Marine Department before being finally selected for the course. They should have 6/6 in each eye without visual aids and should be free from colour blindness.

The syllabus of the course is drawn up with a view to giving broad-based marine education, with special emphasis on fundamentals of marine subjects and practical aspects of profession.
All applicants to the above 1-year Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) course leading to B.Sc (Applied Nautical Science) need to fulfill the guidelines of the Director-General of Shipping, Mumbai with regard to physical fitness. The prospective candidates are required to produce a medical fitness certificate in the prescribed format issued by a Medical Officer approved by Directorate General of Shipping.
Only unmarried candidates are eligible to apply for Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) Course.
